Students investigate natural genetic variation leading to variable survival rates in brine shrimp. Students place brine shrimp eggs in solutions of different salinity and measure hatching viability. Then students design and conduct an experiment to investigate further another factor that may impact hatching viability or survival rates of brine shrimp. Kit includes enough materials for 8 groups.

Unit Connection
Unit 7: Natural Selection, topics 7.2: Natural Selection and 7.3: Artificial Selection

Standards Connection
EVO-1 Evolution is characterized by a change in the genetic makeup of a population over time and is supported by multiple lines of evidence.

Time Requirements
The Pre-Lab takes approximately 60 minutes of preparation, the Guided Investigation takes approximately 55 minutes of preparation, and the Inquiry Investigation takes approximately 30 minutes of preparation.

The Pre-Lab takes approximately 45 minutes. The Guided Investigation takes approximately 30 minutes on Day 1, 15 minutes on Day 2, and 15 minutes on Day 3. The time required for the Inquiry Investigation will vary based on students' plans.

Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support instruction. Digital resources may include a teacher manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should be familiar with use of a stereomicroscope and preparation of solutions. They also should have a basic understanding Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection; a conceptual understanding of evolution as the change in the genetic makeup of a population over time; the biological species concept; and the influence of isolating mechanisms on the accumulation of genetic differences in a population, which may eventually lead to speciation.

Carolina Investigations® for AP* Biology Kits

Teach AP® Biology Your Way with Support from a Name You Can Trust

With the current AP® Biology curriculum, you are no longer limited to 12 prescribed labs in your classroom—meaning you can now teach the course using labs that fit your classroom and student interests.

Exclusive kits from Carolina

Carolina is proud to be the only supplier with unique kits and activities that are exclusively designed for the new AP® curriculum. Our Carolina Investigations® series is specifically aligned to the Big Ideas and Science Practices and was built from the ground up with the help of expert AP® teachers.

Inquiry made simple

Focused on making inquiry easier in your classroom, Carolina Investigations® kits feature activities that allow students to take a guided approach to inquiry while building their Science Practices and connecting the Big Ideas. These kits offer an initial skill-building activity that features a more traditional classroom approach. This is followed by a secondary investigation using a unique experimental design template to help guide those student-driven, inquiry-based learning opportunities.
